Birds
Millions of birds come to breed in the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, which consists of four Islands; Great, Gull, Green and PeePee. It is one of the most important breeding sites in eastern North America. Some of the birds found here include the Atlantic Puffin (the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador), common Murres, thick-billed Murres, Kittiwakes, Leach's Storm Petrels, Razorbills, Northern Fulmars, Black Guillemots, Herring Gulls and great Black-Backed Gulls.
It is absolutely amazing to see and hear the thousands upon thousands of birds perching, flying, diving, feeding and calling. The skies and water are literally alive with them. Great Island supposedly has the largest Atlantic Puffin Colony in the Northwest Atlantic. It is one of the nicest birds to watch. It is a great diver but poor flier, having to flap its wings 300 - 400 times a minute just to maintain flight. When it is trying to take off on the water it looks as if it is too full to be able to fly. The Penguin-like Murres are also quite the sight, lined off along the cliff edges. The birds are a totally unforgettable sight to behold.
